Like Erv, I've tried the chat/write method but it isn't as good as the cline feature. You can probably get by using a global rule to tell it to plan something when in "chat mode" though.

Write/Chat is sort of related, but Plan/Act feels smoother in Cline.

Specifically the ability to have the agent explore, plan out changes, and then ask the user to switch to Act mode if the user is ready to proceed. Many times this saved me from having to stop the agent from making a bunch of changes that I'd have to reject because it misunderstood the prompt or had an incomplete plan that wasn't obvious until it got too far into changes.

The last time I tried this with starting in Chat mode hoping to later switch to Write mode, Chat mode didn't realize it was unable to make changes and started to try (which failed because it was Chat mode) instead of saying, "Hey, I'm ready to make changes. If you agree with the plan, switch to Write mode please".
